Migrating from PanelView Plus to PanelView Plus 6: What You Need to Know

As industrial automation systems evolve, many facilities are looking to upgrade aging HMI hardware. One of the most common migrations we see is from the Allen-Bradley PanelView Plus to the newer PanelView Plus 6 series. We support both lines, giving customers the flexibility to keep their end of life hardware running, while also giving customers the option to migrate.

In this article, we break down the key differences and explain what to expect when migrating your PanelView Plus terminals to the PanelView Plus 6 platform.

Why Migrate to PanelView Plus 6?

The original PanelView Plus terminals are reliable workhorses, but they were introduced nearly two decades ago and are based on older hardware. AB PanelView Plus 6 brings the series into a modernized, high-performance standard while keeping the form factor and configuration familiar.

Here are some major differences with the PanelView Plus 6:

Technical Improvements

Feature PanelView Plus PanelView Plus 6
Performance Legacy CPU and memory Up to 3× faster with upgraded processor
Memory 64 MB RAM / 64 MB flash 256 MB RAM / 512 MB flash (expandable)
Operating System Windows CE 4.1 / 5.0 Windows CE 6.0
USB Support Limited or none 2× USB 2.0 ports standard
Graphics Standard performance Enhanced graphics and faster screen response
Software Compatibility FactoryTalk View ME 5.10 or earlier* We do not support software and make no representation as to the software on a unit FactoryTalk View ME 6.0 or later* We do not support software and make no representation as to the software on a unit

The increased memory and processor speed in the PanelView Plus 6 terminals enable faster boot times, quicker screen changes, and support for more complex graphics — all important benefits in time-sensitive production environments.

🔄 Migration Example: 2711P-T10C4D8

If you're using a 2711P-T10C4D8 — a 10.4" color touchscreen PanelView Plus terminal with Ethernet and RS-232 communication — here are supported PanelView Plus 6 migration targets:

Migration Options:

  • 2711P-T10C15D1 – DC power, Ethernet, RS-232

  • 2711P-T10C15D2 – AC power, Ethernet, RS-232

  • 2711P-T10C4D1 / D2 – PV+6 models with similar communication setups

  • 2711P-T10C6D1 / D2 – Enhanced PV+6 models supporting optional comm modules (e.g., DH+, RIO, ControlNet)

These replacement models retain:

  • The same 10.4" screen and touchscreen interface

  • The same panel cutout for drop-in installation

  • Equivalent communication options

Why Some Customers Choose Not to Migrate

While Rockwell recommends upgrading to the Plus 6 platform, not all customers are ready or able to migrate. Here’s why:

  • Budget or timeline constraints

  • Legacy system dependencies (older PLCs or network types)

  • Fully functional existing terminals with no immediate need to replace

  • Project validation concerns or risk tolerance in regulated industries

How We Support Both Paths

We understand the needs of every facility are different — that’s why we carry both PanelView Plus and PanelView Plus 6 hardware, including:

  • Complete terminals (Surplus and Used)

  • Replacement displays and logic modules

  • Communication modules (DH+, ControlNet, RIO)

  • Compatible accessories, power supplies, and USB cables

Whether you're looking to extend the life of your existing systems or upgrade to modern hardware, we’re here to help. Our inventory is fully tested, verified, and backed by warranty.
